Description
Eyes in the Field is an original artwork I created from an idea that began during a research trip to Pakistan while writing Borders or Brothers, where I visited locations connected to moments of the 1947 Partition.
As part of that journey, I went into a cornfield and stood still among the stalks. I tried to imagine what it would have felt like to hide there—to save your own life and the lives of your family. To remain unseen, while peering through the field for those who were looking for you.
Years later, while creating Navigating Borders, I found myself facing a blank exhibition wall. That experience in the field returned to me, and Eyes in the Field emerged.
The many eyes represent that state of survival: watching, waiting, hiding, searching, praying and calculating the next move. How does one stay alive when being seen can mean death?
